Altar Guild

Episcopal Church of the Advent Altar Guild

The ninety women and men of the Advent Altar Guild invite you to join us in setting the scene for our worship services. We arrange the altar flowers, prepare our Eucharistic meal, and assist at weddings and funerals. We polish the silver and brass, fill the candles with oil, care for the linens, and take the altar flowers to our homebound. We are on the job every day. Most positions take an hour once a month and many can be done on your own schedule. All can be done with a partner. There are no scheduled meetings. If you would like more information, please call the Directress, Deborah McAbee, at 713-459-3667.

Altar Setup and Takedown for Holy Eucharist

  • Setting the Altar for Holy Eucharist: Literally and figuratively, it is preparing for a feast. Vessels and linens for the Holy Eucharist will be in the Sacristy. The Chalice with set-up is placed on the Altar and covered with a Veil. The remaining vessels are placed on the Credence Table according to the directions posted in the Sacristy. At certain services, the Flagon and Ciborium are placed in the Narthex. This activity requires about 15 minutes.

  • Taking Down the Altar after Holy Eucharist: All vessels are removed to the Sacristy and either cleaned for the next service or stored appropriately. This activity takes about 30 minutes.

Brass/Silver: The brass and silver polishers can work on their own schedules. Supplies are provided.  We polish the Eucharistic vessels, the alms basins, the rails and the flower vases.

Candles: The candle fillers can work on the own schedules for that week prior to Sunday.  Special services during the year may require more filling for that week.  Usual time about 30 minutes.

  • Takeoff: The flowers are taken off the altar and font after the last service on Sunday and arranged in vases for delivery.
  • Delivery: The flowers (already arranged) are delivered on Sunday or Monday to parishioners. The clergy (with help from the Pastoral Care teams) make up the list for deliveries.

Linens: The Linen Committee wash and iron the linens for both the Sanctuary and the Chapel. One person does linens for one month. The Advent has beautiful linens for Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, All Saints and Baptismal towels.

Weddings: The directress of the Wedding Committee meets with the bride and her mother several months before the wedding date. Volunteers help at the rehearsal and the wedding to assist the directress as needed. This usually requires about 4 hours of time the day of the wedding.
